I decided to go to the Museum Of Fine Arts, Houston where I found three artworks that I was interested in. I decided to write about Sparks by Hans Hofmann, Rue Ravignan, Paris by Maximilien Luce, and lastly Rainy Midnight by Childe Hassam. All three of these painting have something different from each other which caught my attention. The first artwork I chose is by Hans Hofmann, it is a oil on canvas painting called Sparks made in the year 1957.The image is trying to show sparks and the explosion of them.The painting is abstract because instead of actually painting in detail he decided to just use other shapes mainly consisting of squares to represent the sparks. He shows different values of colors he mainly uses darker shades of color to show how it is night time. He gives the idea of there being light by using brighter colors or tint to help show that there is lampposts providing light into the street. The visual texture looks rough due to the stippling but the actual texture is smooth. This painting shows the street Rue Ravignan while it is empty. It shows a typical street transformed into eerie scene which makes it look desolated because there is no one around. He was known as an anarchist and I believe he is trying to show here his hatred for the mix of beauty achieved by the wealthy aristocrats present on the street of Rue Ravignan and showing how it would be without order, just a sad, lonely place that no one would want to end up at. I think that Maximilien was successful in showing what he was trying to communicate because he focused on the details and knew that without the street being filled with people it would have a whole different meaning. If I were to change something from the painting it would most likely be to remove the one man walking alone on the side. I chose this artwork because I was interested in the amount of detail that was used to create it.
