The internet evolved over time and did not have a particular inventor. It started in the late 1950’s as a way for government researchers to share information and “a weapon in the Cold War.” (Invention) On October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union orbited the world’s first satellite called Sputnik. The Sputnik allowed scientists to get important information even though it did not have any scientific instruments. The satellite was just rotating around in space sending beeping and other signals. This alarmed Americans who now saw a need for more advanced technology and science. The Soviets were focusing on technology and advancements and with the launch of this satellite Americans feared the Soviets were going to win the Cold War. “American scientists …show more content…
In 1992 a big advancement happened. A group of students and researchers at the University of Illinois created a browser called Mosaic which is now called Netscape. “It was a user friendly way to search the Web” (Invention). For the first time, viewers could see words and pictures together on the same page. Also there were clickable links which was new and exciting. In addition, scrollbar could be used to navigate around. Further, Congress allowed the Web to be used for commercial purposes. With this announcement, companies started to set up their own websites. Also the internet was used to sell goods directly to customers for the first time. The internet “was envisioned as supporting a range of functions from file sharing and remote login to resource sharing and collaboration, and has spawned electronic mail and more recently the World Wide Web.” (Internet) The Google search engine debuted in 1998. MySpace, Skype, Safari Web browser and other engines debuted. Further, social media has been on the rise. Facebook allows people to stay in touch and see photos, videos, status updates and what’s trending. Also instagram has emerged as a way for people to stay connected with family and friends. Twitter is the latest news and updates. Schools are using twitter for latest updates in academics, athletics school closings
