Cyber bullying is a growing type of bullying which is convenient and effective. Cyber bullying is defined by Stop-Bullying.gov as “Bullying that takes place using electronic technology… Including texts, emails, or posts on social media sites”. This hybrid type of bullying covers numerous mediums, causing it to have such an effect. When online, anything can be said without much worry due to the distance of the bully and the victim. That being said, according to Stop-Bullying.gov, victims of cyber bullying are often bullied physically as well. Both types of bullying combined can be very tragic for a victim. Signs that parents can look for if they suspect their child is being bullied include: “Skipping school, low self-esteem, and low grades” (Stop-Bullying). Schools are often tasked with the job of dealing with cyber bullying. With the recent advances in technology over the last couple of years, schools with younger students are forced to deal with this more. An article written in the New York Times by reporter Jan Hoffman covered a story of cyber bullying in New Jersey. In the article a 12 year old boy sent disturbing texts to a girl in the same grade as him and the parents were horrified. The school principal Tony Orsini replied to the parent’s wishes stating “’This occurred out of school on a weekend, I cannot punish him’” (Hoffman). It is difficult for a school district and law enforcement to find the direct source of cyber bullying, when an image or comment is posted online, many people can save the information to their personal device or share and repost it on social media. Unfortunately it took a number of high-profile cases, and even some suicides, to bring the issue to the attention of many states’ courts and legislatures. “As of 2014, 49 out of 50 states had laws in place centered around bullying, and 20 of those states specifically stated “cyberbullying” in the legislation” (Warren, 2014). Few policies address cyberbullying that occurs off campus although federal policies exist for interventions in case of disruption of the educational environment. As of right now, most states require the department of education to set up their own anti-bullying programs and discipline guidelines as well as intimidation and harassment laws that include “electronic methods of bullying” (Warren, 2014).…

It is much harder to control this type of behavior because students can sit behind a screen and never actually show bullying behavior in front of administrators. This allows them to evade punishments because the schools have a much harder time catching the adolescent engaging in this behavior. Santrock explains that cyber bullying has actually been linked to higher tendencies of suicidal ideation than traditional bullying (2016). With the increased use of technology, this has become the easiest, most well-hidden way to conduct bullying behavior and since it is not caught as much, more children are leaning towards using cyberspace for their bullying. Despite this, schools should take the same approach from “three strikes, you’re out” because of the fact that suicide has been linked more to cyber bullying.…
