All my life I’ve been surrounded by farming. Yet I’ve always wondered what will happen to farming as we know today by how fast our population is growing. Where will we get the food to feed this ever-growing population? Well there is a new innovative idea that could become the solution, Vertical Farms! As Friedman says in “The World is Flat”, “Whatever can be done will be done. So, if you have an idea, pursue it. Because someone else will have a similar idea, and pursue it, faster than you think” (pg.442). Therefore, I believe that Washington state would be smart to focus on vertical farms because it will help attract “untouchable” jobs, such as great collaborators and orchestrators …show more content…
On the other hand, some believe that “the concept has provided opportunities for architecture students and others to create innovative, sometimes beautiful building designs, it holds little practical potential for providing food (Cox,www.treehugger.com).” But they also think that “there are big losses of energy and heavy infrastructure costs. It’s about as wasteful as a system can be. Better to let crop plants do what they do best: capture cost-free, emissions-free sunlight for themselves, directly (Alter,www.treehugger.com).” Yet I disagree with these statements because “There is a rising consumer demand for locally grown vegetables and fruits, as well as intense urban-farming activity in cities throughout the United States. Vertical farms would not only revolutionize and improve urban life but also revitalize land that was damaged by traditional farming. For every indoor acre farmed, some 10 to 20 outdoor acres of farmland could be allowed to return to their original ecological state (Despommier,www.nytimes.com).” With this said, vertical farming will provide locally grown food, will help cut down on the area used for traditional farming and will provide new jobs for the growing population and ever-flattening world. Vertical farming could be the next big
