This idea of managing the community is displayed in the society of Brave New World and also today’s society. Brave New World was an example of a government which went to great extremes of conditioning the people into their beliefs. For example, small proverbs – called hypnopaedia –were taught to the children as a type of sleep and subliminal conditioning. This would be similar to the reliance on proverbs today such as the ones today. People generally entrust the government if they create a structure meeting the people’s need for their personal wellness. These factors are important to staying happy, and the positive attitude created by what one enjoys has a significant impact to the amount of effort put forth in the end. Societies that provide a community full of people willing to put in more effort, tended to flourish more, due to the reliance and trust they had towards those who provided them with their job. In Brave New World, the amount of induced happiness is almost excessive, as one is viewed to be odd in a state of misery. However, this depressing state has become extremely rare, due to their invention of a “happy drug” called soma. Soma is taken by a citizen whenever they are under stress, and not in a situation where their responsibility is needed. This drug not only calms its recipient, but it also distracts one from understanding something wrong or unjust about a situation. The government had just made it easier to manipulate the community through the introduction of soma. Mustapha Mond, one of the ten world controllers in Brave New World, described soma to be a “euphoric, narcotic, pleasantly hallucinant” (Chapter 3 p.37) drug.
