The World According To Garp Analysis

The first book I read in english class this year was The World According to Garp, a book known for its forward thinking material. During a conversation in class, a question arose about Garp, Jenny, and many other main characters: are they good people. Main characters, while flawed, are good often portrayed as ethical human beings; however Garp and co cautiously walked a moral line. My conclusion was that no, they were not good people, but they weren’t bad people either.
If I were to go up to people on the street and ask them if they were a good person, I am almost positive most people would say yes. Nevertheless, the fact remains that statistically most people have to be average human beings. Still, I do think it says something that people,

To be a good person, to me at least, one need try to be moral, by whatever standards fit one’s own definition. I think one also need to understand the personality traits that sets one back, and in doing so, one can make an effort to remedy them.
With such a vague definition, it might be hard to ask specific questions. I think a good question could be what causes do you care about the most and how do you fight for them? For me, I would say animal rights and the environment -- which can go hand in hand. And I try to fight for those causes by educating people on ways they can help the planet. I also don’t contribute money to brands or industries I feel exploit either of the two.
Another question could be as simple as what do you do, everyday or otherwise, to try and be good? Just like most people, I would like to consider myself a good person. Perhaps it’s naive and even hypocritical to claim this, but I do actively try to better myself every day. I know that I can be dogmatic at times, and I often get into foul moods and say things I probably shouldn’t. Conversely, I remind my friends to wear sunscreen everyday because I am worried about their health. I am always willing and ready to watch someone at a party and to make sure they get home okay. I think I give spectacular; I will sit down and listen to someone else's problems for hours. Many would say I am the “mom” of my friend group, and I love hearing that, because it shows to me that they think of me as responsible and caring and most importantly empathetic to their problems and, consequently, always willing to

To say The World According to Garp is interesting would be a gargantuan understatement. Irving’s literary fiction book is alluring, compelling, and darkly whimsical. It starts off with a character by the name of Jenny Fields. A devoutly single woman, she finds herself in a movie theater being groped by a random man. Her reaction: slice his arm open with a scalpel she keeps in her purse.…

The social that I am most passionate about is, equity versus equality. Many people do not realize that there is a difference between giving just enough to allow someone or a community to get by, and providing the same amount of resources. This social issue affects my generation in many ways. When it comes to equal pay of the sexes, equity versus equality is very big factor. Education is another area where equity verses equality comes into play.…

Plato’s writings often focus on finding the essence; or eternal, unchanging form of a concept, what is the essence of tree, or piety, or justice. When Socrates questions characters in the dialogues as to what they think he is often given an example instead of a definition. Plato, in his writings, tried to do the opposite to determine the form and then in turn determine how that would be represented in the physical world. Plato’s Ontological hierarchy begins with living true to your being which in turn can become a just individual and society, this can result in an expression of “the good," the highest form Plato can imagine.…

In my opinion Anne’s quote “despite everything, I still believe that people are basically good at heart” is something I have to agree with. In the play a example of people being good at heart is Miep and Mr. Kraler protecting the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel even though they knew what could happen to them if/when they were found. They were not only risking their lives hiding the Jews but also they were getting extra food with the Jews food stamps, knowing that one day someone would notice that they had extra and where getting more food than they needed. Another example of people being good at heart comes from the life article on Anne Frank by Ernst Schnabel. In “A Tragedy Revealed: A Heroine’s LAst Days”, Ernst talked to many people…

In religious, common ethics, the terms good and bad is always mentioned, it is something that comes from our actions and also how we treat ourselves. Both good and evil are perceived as part of an antagonistic duality that it must be overcome through achieving. The majority of us are always trying to look for the easy way out, but that is another word for being lazy. And that we should aim at higher levels with the potential that we have. For example, I, or many have possibly experienced: when we put our full efforts into something and we didn’t get the result we hoped for; we get awfully upset and give up.…

To say a person is naturally good or evil from birth is a misnomer. Good and evil are traits that exist within every individual in equal measure. Every person without fail is a combination of various positive and negative aspects. People that behave in a cruel manner that can be construed as evil could be rehabilitated and eventually display good qualities such as empathy and kindness or vice versa. Being good is in my own opinion is the combination of abilities to empathise with others, and the to put others before yourself.…

Within society, people can believe that they are a good person. They support others with their tasks of personal and professional life and make time to support their own tasks of personal and professional life. Even though people may believe from their own thinking that they are a good person, others may wonder if they really are a good person. By aligning a person’s actions with theories from the three ethical categories of normative, meta, and applied ethics, people can actually find out whether or not they are really a good person. With all this in mind, does my actions validate my belief that I really am a good person when they are aligned against theories from the three categories of ethics?…
