The workplace should be a safe environment. An employee should have the ability to start their day with a fresh mindset and complete their duties to the best of their abilities. When negativity enters an individual’s psyche, their performance will change. “Lateral violence, also known as nurse-to-nurse violence or bullying, is disruptive behavior that interferes with effective health care communication and thus threatens a culture of patient safety.” (Bigony, Lipke, et. al. p. 688) Lateral violence can impair an employee’s ability to perform their responsibilities correctly. Lateral violence can occur at any time, with the surveys being disseminated quarterly the nurse may forget minor lateral violence occurrences or down play an incident that occurred a month or so ago. The sample focuses on nurses in Intensive Care Units within two contrasting healthcare organizations. This small sample will limit the results. A lack of diversity within the sample may also limit the study. Participants may also be a limitation as nurses tend to transfer in and out of units on a regular basis. Some nurses leave the profession all together. With the duration of the study being a yearlong process, this may impair the data. Time may also become a limitation as it is a known fact that nurses are sometimes so busy they are unable to use the bathroom let alone complete a survey.
