This is seen as the Self Portrait by Gordon Bennet uses the words ‘I AM’ to convey message and create a question on the stereotypes of Aborigines. The main use of black and white colours to represent the different races and emphasis on the words ‘I am light, I am dark’ also creating negative and positive spaces. The use of symbols is used in Bennet’s work as the image of the boy represent himself in a western costume a cowboy, yet his nationality is part Aboriginal. The issues addressed in the artist’s work include identity, history and culture through a self-portrait of the artist to represent their identity in images of their background and history. While in Michael Ray Charles works he also uses text, as it is used to distinguish and elaborate the deeper meaning of African American freedom and the idea of slavery. The colours used are more vibrate as this gives a sense of a stronger view towards the issue as it is bold and stands out. The use of negative and positive space in seen in Charles work as he focused the Sambo having the face completely black with red lips a lighter colour in the background as this creates a more focus point towards the Sambo. Contrary to these findings, there were significant differences as both artists use different ways to show the issue as Bennet artwork include images of his background and history influences while Charles uses images of advertisements to show his culture and history.
