When I walk through the middle school halls at my job I hear many students using this word to describe something that doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. The word I hear is the word retarded which true definition is “ characterized by a slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness emotional development, academic progress, etc” (Dictonary.com 1) However when I hear it used at work it used like this “Man this phone is retarded it never does anything right, it must be broken’ or it used this way “ Bro you’re a retard, why did you that.” This use of the word in the way is when retard or retarded is defined by this meaning “stupid or foolish” ( Dictionary.com 1). All I can do when I hear them and say be careful of what word you use in school. When I say that they look at my students, some of their eyes get big and utter out a “I’m sorry” some on the other hand say “Ok” with a look of I don’t know why I need to be careful with my word choices, and all I can do is walk away shaking my head. What happen to world where young children thought before they spoke and not just blurted out offensive words to hurt people they don’t even know anything about?

To get a better understanding of the word and why it is powerful in so many and why the word need to stopped. The word traces back to the year 1846 where physician S.G Howe coined the term simpleton. “Simpleton was intended to mean people mild intellectual disability. “The R-word spreads HURT“It is wrong to pain people with your language. Especially, when you have already been made aware of your oral transgression's impact. Make no mistake about it: WORDS DO HURT! And when you pepper your speak with "retard" and "retarded," you are spreading hurt.” – John C. McGinley, actor and star of the hit TV show “Scrubs”” (R-word) “The R-word is OFFENSIVE “The word retard is considered hate speech because it offends people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as the people that care for and support them. It alienates and excludes them. It also emphasizes the negative stereotypes surrounding people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; the common belief that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities should be segregated, hidden away from society, which, in my opinion, is really old fashioned.” – Karleigh Jones, Special Olympics New Zealand athlete” (R-word) These quotes are powerful and true in what they're saying because the word retard or retarded is hurtful and they make it clear in a simple way by just saying words are hurtful. ““Retarded” and “retard” today are variations on a slur. Young people especially like it: as a weapon of derision, it does the job. It’s sharp, with an assaultive potency that words like “moron” and “idiot” lost sometime in the days of black-and-white TV.” (A Word Gone Wrong, Downes

Bauer is hurt by the comments made to Margaret, the common and incorrect usage of the “R” word, and the way the mentally disabled is represented in movies and television shows. The usage of the “R” word and the misrepresentation of those who are mentally disabled is disrespectful to both the families and the individuals. I agree with Bauer; the “R” word shouldn 't be used, there shouldn’t be discrimination against the mentally disabled, it hurts more people than you may realize. It’s hard to believe that five to six years ago the “R” word was commonly used when someone, or yourself, would make a mistake. I can’t even stand hearing or saying that word anymore because it has become so uncommon now, which is a great thing for all of those hurt by the use of the word.…

Recently, political correctness has swept into the forefront of modern day culture. The term has come to mean a variety of things, but at its core is an idea that words and actions should not offend or make anyone uncomfortable. However, South Park has managed to remain strong to its roots by still being inflammatory and offensive with the series continuing to draw heaps of criticism from many different groups. While South Park may not conform to what polite society expects, it manages to provide biting satire and commentary. Marcus Schulzke argues in “South Park and the Transformation of Meaning” that a hateful word’s meaning can be changed over time which can be seen in “The F-Word” in which the boys call a group of loud bikers “fags” as they try to get them to leave town (2012).…

In the passage by Nancy Mairs, she refers to herself as a “cripple.” Her choice to do so, along with her reasoning, and tone was well explained. Nancy Mairs referred to herself as a “cripple” because of many reasons. One of these reasons was that she didn’t like the euphemistic alternatives. She states that using “differently abled” rather than “handicapped” or “disabled” has the same affect as calling a country’s undeveloped state “underdeveloped” or “less developed.”…

Nancy Mairs presents herself as a bold, confident, independent, and straight-forward woman who wants to be defined as who she is, "a cripple". She bluntly states to her audience her cripple status and her views on the use of euphemism or "sugar-coated" words. Mairs is a brutally-honest person doesn't care about the opinions of others but her own. This is evidenced within her use of tone, diction, and syntax to show that euphemism isn't always wanted or used.…

On the other hand she trivializes the what are sought out to be synonyms “handicapped” and “disabled as words that are meant to make those who are less fortunate and do have a disability less than and of a different class than others in society who are considered “normal”. Mairs comes at the terms with completely different tones, one being a tone that is elated and showing enthusiasm and the other being a tone in which she has to hold back her angered and upset emotions. It is not the word necessarily but the fact that…

Throughout time, there have been many words that have offended people of many races and religions. Even in this time period, there continue to be such words. However, there are words that are not meant to be offensive since they carry a different meaning behind them. Such words either sound similar to offensive words or they were “evolved” into offensive words. One word that I would discuss about is “Bitch,” its past, present, and how it affects people.…

When the bully reached his target, he snarled, “You are a stupid butthead.” An unanimous gasp is heard from the audience as the victim’s face turns red as he bites his lip to keep from crying. In the first grade, this was quite a common scene. The second a “bad word” was spoken, eyes would widen, gasps could be audibly heard, and apologies were immediately uttered. Now, years later, words like "stupid" have obviously been replaced with more serious curse…

Another reason why the word should be banned is because the slur causes conflict in school that engenders an interruption impeding the learning environment. Article “Say What! Student Suspended After Being called the N-word And Other Racial Slurs” goes on to say “ According to students at the school, it was Micah who pulled the other to the floor, however, he was defending himself against racial harassment that school leaders haven’t dealt with. Foul language can leave an abiding and pessimistic affect on the population. Sharing a story, expressing an opinion, or general communication can be equally effective without abusive language. Author Stephen L. Wessler emphasizes, "Unfortunately, the routine use of slurs and other degrading language has desensitized too many students... The impact of debasing language on these students is powerful and destructive" (Wessler 29). Hearing this routinely in…

In fact I don’t think everyone should speak the same ever. There are times in my life when I speak and act differently, when I am with my boyfriend’s motorcycle club, I tend to say the f word a lot, I talk about mindless things, and really do not care what anyone thinks of my opinion.…

Should parents be held accountable for the actions of their children? Hearing about what is happening in schools all across the country, being a parent they should talk to their children more about the outcome of something bad happening, maybe not as many young teenagers would go partying, do drugs or bully someone to the point of death. Communicating with your child is probably the biggest outcome of how he or she acts. Teaching them to respect the feelings of others and having them vent their frustrations and anger are all within the parent’s realm of authority (Coconi). It is a parent’s responsibility to recognize their child’s behaviors and rectify them before an innocent or weaker child is hurt (Coconi).…
