Males find the word faggot to be very degrading because of the way our society looks at homosexuals. Our society has many very unique stereotype against homosexual males. One of these stereotypes are when we think of a male who is a homosexual we get an image of a very feminine-like male who acts, talks, dresses and even looks like a female. Another stereotype our society has made is that homosexuals are perceived as dirty humans. The word faggot is used to convey every stereotype about homosexual men all in one word. In result an individual who do no agree with something a homosexual does will use the word faggot. For this reason, the word faggot is very degrading because homosexual or straight males do not want to be seen in the stereotypical way our society sees homosexual men. When a homosexual man is called a faggot it hurts him because he does not like to be a victim of prejudice. Not every homosexual agrees with the stereotypes society has made for them. When an individual calls another individual a faggot he or she leave an impression on that individual’s emotions and dignity. Depending on the person the word faggot could leave huge confusing questions in the individual’s conscience about their sexuality. When a straight man is called a faggot it makes him think about what gives out the impression that he is a homosexual. When a homosexual male is called a faggot he might start to think that he is not a normal human being and his life style is not right. Sometimes a person is not as strong as other people when it comes to dealing with emotions which in result, that person is left with many harmful thought about not just his sexuality but his physical self. For example, a homosexual male could possible be harassed everyday by being called a faggot. Consequently, he may begin to think that he is not normal and he can not do anything to make him not be a faggot which leaves him being ashamed and stuck with a sexuality that he does not want to have. In the essay “colored me” the author says “I found it out in certain way in my heart as well as in the mirror I became a fast brown warranted not to rub nor run” (Hurston 2). Hurston refers to being black and not being able to do anything about it; just like how a homosexual male individual who is stuck with the sexuality he has. Everyone is
