Poetry can be difficult to understand when you first begin to really read and try to understand to all the underlying things the author has done. It is only through persistence and multiple re-reads that all the a reader will fully understand not only what it is the author is saying, but also why they chose the particular form and diction. Many poets use poetry as a way to describe a feeling or emotion they feel, almost like they romanticize what ever it is that they are trying to describe. It just so happens that the romantic era in history is also one responsible for some of the most influential literary art in our history. In “Lines Written in Early Winter” the speaker seems to be the standard poet, laying around in a grove of trees looking for inspiration, almost like he is a philosopher out to contimplate things. Contrastingly, in Frost 's poem you have no idea what the speaker is doing other than getting lost in the woods because he seems to be too stubborn to turn back. Ironically, it is the shorter poem which seems to give you a greater confidence to judge who the speaker is, even though there is still almost no personal details about the speaker directly. In “The Wood-Pile”, there is almost no mention of the speaker at all, instead it is just his descriptions of the setting he is in. Even the descriptions of the setting itself was vastly different between both poems. Frost is able to use concise descriptions while keeping the use of metaphors and even personifications to a minimal, while Wordsworth utilizes these tools a little bit more liberally. He even personifies the natural surroundings that he is listening to throughout the poem, which may be due to the lack of over all dialogue in the poem. He gets roughly the same message across to the audience, but he is able to use less words because he utilizes literary tools more effectively.
