I do not know in great detail the things my ancestors endured from this social policy but I can try to envision what they would have gone through when this did affect them. My great grandmother Elsie Lind from my mother’s side and my great grandmother Miriam Wathen from my father’s side, both would have been impacted majorly from the Women’s Suffrage and Women’s rights movement. I can imagine they had major difficulty in trying to gain independence and general civil rights as individuals during that time period. Another thing that may have affected them was trying to find jobs due to their gender. Men were always looked at as superior to women during this time so I can see how this would have been a challenge to them. Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States in 1890. They instructed racial segregation in all public facilities, with a "separate but equal" status for African Americans. These conditions made African Americans extremely inferior compared to white Americans. The Jim Crow Laws also enforced the segregation of public schools, public places, public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for white Americans and African Americans. These laws continued to be in force until 1965.
Had my ancestors been African American, they would have been critically impacted by the Jim Crow Laws. I’m positive they would have suffered major segregation and discrimination due to having separate schools, bathrooms, drinking fountains, and public places. One thing for example is that at laundry mats they would put signs over their doors that said “We wash for white people only”.
