After two years of a five year service he wanted out, the only way to do that was to get in contact with his foster father, John Allan, as his lieutenants condition to help him get out. Frances Valentine Allan was Poe 's foster-mother who took him in after the death of both of his parents. John Allan and Frances Allan were not able to have children so they adopted Poe, they were very wealthy which allowed Poe to grow up with a very comfortable life. Up until the day that Frances died she remained the emotional support for Edgar when he and John Allan had a rocky relationship. At the age of 20 Poe met his seven year old first cousin Virginia Clemm, his real father and Virginia 's mother were siblings. He ended up moving into their home for a period of time.
