The Wolves In The Walls Visual Analysis

In stories, such as The Wolves in the Walls and The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country, visuals and illustrations play an important role in conveying some of the themes and providing connections with the characters we otherwise would not have. Though they both take advantage of illustrations, the visuals of the two are very different. In The Wolves in the Walls the visuals are made up of a mix of pictures, paintings, and pen drawings. This type of visual provides us with a look into the world of the story through the perspective of the child that it follows. One of the major themes of the story is perception of reality and imagination as a child and the visuals are key in fully expressing and understanding that. It was appealing to me because I have always thought that Edgar Allen Poe’s work is very interesting and that I have yet to read something from Poe that I dislike. A factor that I liked about the story was the ending, which was a twist. From the beginning we know that the narrator, Montresor, has ill will towards Fortunato and that something was going to happen but I never imagined that he would wall him in alive. And he did so all because Fortunato insulted him many times long ago. I also like the dark tone that the story held, which is consistent with almost all of Poe’s writings. One of the key factors of the story that I liked was the atmosphere that it created. The description of the tunnels and the catacombs were exquisite and allowed me to picture it extremely well. There is also a lot of irony within the story, as we discussed in class, with one of the most obvious forms of irony being Fortunato’s name itself which means “the fortunate one” roughly. All of these factors came together to form a very appealing story for me that I am glad to have
