Part 1: Plot Summary
"The Wives of the Dead" starts off with the narrator assuring readers that his short story is worth reading and relatable. The narrator proceeds to tell the reader about two sisters who just recently found out of their husband's deaths. One of the husbands were killed fighting the French and Indian in Canada, the other was lost at sea. People of the town go to the sisters home to comfort the main characters, Margaret and Mary. Among the townspeople was the minister, he shared many spiritual scriptures and stayed there until the afternoon. Mary prepares dinner for her and Margaret. Margaret says she will never taste food again, but Mary comforts her and brings her back to the reality of living. Later that night the sisters went to their room. Mary fell asleep, while Margaret became more depressed as the night went on. Margaret was looking at the armchairs and thinking of her husband and his brother sitting there but was interrupted by a knocking on the door. It was a well-known innkeeper at the door named Goodman Parker. He told Margaret that a man came in a half hour ago with a letter from the governor saying that the thirteen men who supposedly died were alive and her husband was one of them. Margaret was overjoyed and ran into Mary's room to tell her, but soon remembered Mary's sorrow of her husband and didn't want to upset her. Margaret went to bed and later, Mary woke up. She was awakened by a knock at the door. It was a man named Stephen who tried to be with her before she had gotten married. He told her he saw her husband yesterday and that he survived the wreck and is coming home tomorrow. Mary was filled with joy and immediately went into Margaret's room to
