Stories like “Cinderella” that have absent and/or abusive parents help kids deal with similar problems in their home life. It shows that even in a world of magic not everything can be fixed and people can still be bad parents or bad people in general. The tales can also help make sense of what is going on in child’s life since they might not understand yet or have no one around that they can relate to about their problems with their parents or otherwise. Other ideals, like the fear of failure or becoming resourceful are dealt with as well. In any spinning tale like The Three Spinners or Rumpelstiltskin the main character has fix her predicament with the resources she has around her, even if it is magic, something we don’t have as a resource in our lives. In “Little Red Riding Hood” it is a girl portrayed as gullible, telling the wolf where grannies house is and taking her time to get there, or a girl who is thought to be gullible by the wolf and in the end tricks him. It shows the thought that women are easy to take advantage of because of their dull-mindedness or naivety. Tale types like “Cinderella” showcase the cooking and cleaning aspect of what women are thought to supposed to be doing to be useful at all. In most stories she either starts off cleaning and taking care of the sisters and uses her beauty or dresses to charm the prince or she uses cooking to charm him after he sees her beauty. Never once does her personality or other “non-womanly” talents come into play when he falls in love with her. In “Beauty and the Beast” it is almost always a beautiful girl that has to marry an ugly male beast.
