She chooses to miss a family event in order to take care of her appearance by washing her hair. She created an adult facade, developing a new attitude for herself which causes her to rebel against her parents She lies to her parents to go with males that show an interest in her.…
Regan and Liam’s parents are struggling with their gender roles and what society expects from them. Society expects a father to show love, compassion, patience for their family. Not only they need to be dedicated and take responsibility for the family. Regan’s dad, Mr. O’Neill, wants to be the traditional “normal” family where the wife doesn’t work (stay at home mom), the son is bonding with the dad and doing “manly” things, and the daughter doing house work such as cooking and cleaning. Her dad failing to realize the option to have a normal family is not available because there are so many problems that are being untended.…
The power dynamics within the family has shifted due to Brendan’s dependency on Lena, which has created additional pressure in having to cope with the behaviours displayed by Karen, Lucas and…
How odd would it be if everyone was the same? If no one had a unique Identity. Identity makes you who you are. I am a very social person even though I don't come from a very large family. I love to play sports but sometimes love to be lazy!…
All aspects of gender are constructed by social, societal factors. Within just one day, I recorded the instances I found myself or someone around me “doing gender.” “Doing gender” means that people constantly create and change aspects of “gender” based on human interaction and social life, mostly without even being aware of it (Lorber 1). Additionally, the media is repeatedly shaping what masculinity and femininity “should” look like through magazines, films, and politics (Miss Representation). This social construction has been extremely problematic throughout our history in how it affects the self-reflection and identities of men and women in the United States.…
In magazines aimed at the general population, including Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair, women are oversexualized with provocative slogans, little to no clothing, and electronically edited photos. This creates an apparent distinction between what the media reinforces as the ideal woman and what women really look like. Here, a phenomenon called the feminine beauty ideal arises. The feminine beauty ideal is "the socially constructed notion that physical attractiveness is one of women 's most important assets, and something all women should strive to achieve and maintain." (Spade 3)…
The two sources I will be evaluating are The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan and Home- Grown Radical or Home- Bound Housewife? Rethinking the Origins of the 1960s Feminism through the Life and Work of Betty Friedan by Lori E. Rotskoff. I will be evaluating these sources by looking at the origin, purpose, and content through the lenses of values and limitations. I am going to answer the question, to what extent did The Feminine Mystique lay the ideological foundations for second wave feminism? I will analyze these sources and conduct research to prove that The Feminine Mystique did pave the way for second wave feminism.…
In the past accusations of witchcraft ran rampant causing panic wherever it went. 75%-90% of those tried and executed during this occurrence were female as opposed to the 10%-25%, which were males. It was apparent that women were linked to negative beliefs about dangerous magic and association with the devil, or judged based on systems of power in communities and courts worked against women rather than men. The concept of Gender plays an important role in shaping ideas about witches. In the musical “Wicked” by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman encompasses a variety of gender concept that contributed to the notion of witchcraft as well as the musical itself.…
Everyone at school called him a girl; this upset Jeremy so he pulled his pants down and explained that he is clearly a boy. However, his classmate did not seem to think that was enough evidence for him to claim being a man. Peggy goes further to question if the biological equipment does not suffice to differ male from female, then what does? (2011). She believes that the children see male/female differences in clothing, hairstyle, and toy and color preference. Lise Eliot, a neuroscientist, claims that the concept of sex differences and gender identity is hard for children to understand due to the later development of the frontal cortex; Eliot relates this…
that emerged in previous research exploring Black women’s gendered racial identity. Across age groups (15 – 47), Black women consistently acknowledged how their experiences are intertwined, thereby leaving them particularly prone to discrimination, oppression, and stereotyping on the basis of their race and gender (Settles, 2006; Thomas et al., 2011). In this way women’s responses in the current sample align with that of previous research. However, there are three ways in which responses from women in the current sample differ or enhance the findings of previous research on Black women’s gendered racial identity.…
Aaron Devor, the author of the essay “Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes”, states that gender is a social construct that has very little to do with biology. On the other hand, Deborah Blum, in her essay “The Gender Blur: Where Does Biology End And Society Take Over”, claims that while society has an effect on gender, so does biology. In this essay, I plan to present the argument that biology and society both have an effect on gender. I, like Blum, noticed biological gender differences in my children (two boys and a girl). As a father who has raised his children to believe that, men and women both do the housework, I noticed that my boys were much more aggressive than my daughter ever was even before pre-school.…
With more examples of differences in gender identity in the media, such as celebrities or even laws being passed against transgender individuals, transgender issues and attention to their medical care has to be incorporated into medical education. Gender dysphoria is characterized by a sense of distress that related to an individual’s gender identity and that person’s assigned gender at birth, based on his or her sex characteristics (Bonifacio, 2015). While some individuals do exhibit certain signs of dysphoria, if they are accepted for their gender identity feelings of dysphoria are usually lessened. In Wanda J’s case, her parents’ expression of disdain and shame for her gender identity has lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. Wanda…
It was my one of my senior years of college and I was signed up for a creative writing class. It was a small class with about twelve students. Our professor was an old man who had written a couple short stories published in several anthologies. The class was like any other writing class; we would read some short stories then write our own. There was a young man in the class that would always write these dark stories about how what is was like to have something inside of you that was completely different from how the world saw them.…
In “Feminist Perspectives on Sex and Gender”, Mikkola argues that: “Without heterosexism that compels people to engage in certain gendering acts, there would not be any genders at all” (16). When, as a teenager, Liam wants to join a group of girls at a party, his father objects. He claims that joining the girls would be inappropriate because of his son’s “raging hormones” (Peters 42). His claim is once again, rooted in an overly simplistic understanding of gender identity and sexual preferences. These behaviors contribute to Luna’s psychological struggles with her identity and compel her to a hide her gender expression for most part of the novel.…
Gender is not primarily natural, but assimilated. Gender identity is “created” by all the experiences and structures that surround us as we become human beings. Everything we are is the result of our choices. We not only create our own values, but we also build ourselves out of our own resources and those which society gives us. Generally, one is not born anything.…
