Going with the description the author has given us, there were major marriage issues between Delia and the husband, Sykes. As can clearly be seen that Delia tried to end the rough times they had but the husband was never willing, and he always pushed her away. The idea of coming home with a snake was one way of scaring her away; Delia was never comfortable with this something the husband ever seemed to enjoy. At the point when the snake escaped the cage, Delia managed to notice but the husband had not an idea. He was bitten accidentally by the snake. Delia always had the fear of snakes and could not approach to save him.

At the first instance when she noticed the snake had escaped, she could have either tried to take it back to the cage. It’s,
