While going over it we got information about most of the characters and what their roles are throughout the story. I’m going to tell you my favorite people in the story for why and what they do throughout the story. Also why they are important to story itself.

To begin, the very first character is The Wife of Bath. She is know for alway looking for money. She’s like money hungry in way. With the information that the prologue gave us we would classify her as middle/lower class. She has had five husbands, but in every way they never seem to know how they die. J.M. Barrie, in Peter Pan, once said “Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.” In “Marita’s Bargain” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” both main characters sacrifice something willingly to get what they really want. In the end, the Knight and Marita were fully reimbursed for their sacrifices and feel that they were worth it.…

Self-confident, manipulative, and a duplicitous woman is how Chaucer, the great iconoclast of patriarchy, creates the portrait of the wife through the use of symbolism, metaphor, and paradox. In the “Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales, the “Wife of Bath’s Prologue,” and “Tale,” Chaucer’s deliberate satire upon marriage and women highlights the wife, Alyson, as a sexual desire. Depicted by the people as an idyllic woman, however there’s a dichotomy in her character for Alyson is not the person she portrays to be. In the general prologue, the usage of symbolism describing Alyson’s physical appearance help express her self-confidence.…

The concept of gender roles is defined as what behaviors are deemed to be acceptable and desirable for a person based on their sex. These generalizations have major effects on both genders; however, they have a significant negative impact on women. The stories “The Wife of Bath’s Tale”, “The Men We Carry in Our Minds”, and “Saudi Women Defy Driving Law” explore some of the commonly seen generalizations surrounding both genders and how they affect the two and how they have changed. Throughout history women were viewed as the inferior gender. This is evident especially throughout the medieval times.…

Consider Arthur's giving maistrie to Guenevere, the rapist-knight's giving it to his hag-wife, and the hag-wife (in her beautiful form) returning it to the rapist-knight (perhaps immediatelyafter receiving it). Although they had similar ideas of greed, their stories had different ways to get it, and their outcomes were also noticeably different. In the Wife of Bath’s tale, the husband had a beautiful wife and was happy, but the Pardoner’s tale, the men died over money.[TS6-Contrast]. At the end of the Wife of Bath’s tale, for the wrong reasons the knight had a beautiful wife, he originally didn’t love until she was beautiful, but he lived happily after that.[CE11]. “And when the knight saw truly that she was so fair and so young, he clasped her in his two arms for joy, his heart bathed in a bath of bliss. A thousand times in a row he kissed her.…

A wife leaving her husband is not that big of a deal nowadays, but in the past it was unheard of. Women had no rights and were not able to fend for themselves. Society had made it so that women had to rely on a man for everything. This is how Nora Helmer, the main character in Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, found her life to be. She always had to ask her husband for money, since she could not get a job to make her own.…

The knight in “The Prologue” is distinguished because he has won many battles. He follows the code of chivalry (truth, honor, generousness, and courtesy.) This knight would be considered noble. He had a really good horse but didn’t care what he looked like. He was an overall good guy.…

She assumes that men are either too ignorant to realize that she constantly lies to and fools them, or that they are just too weak to overcome her sexual plots. Her first four husbands, for the most part, fell into at least one of these two categories, and in doing so, they proved the wife correct. The foolishness of those men caused Alisoun to lose respect for men in general, and to believe that all men were this easily thwarted. Her fifth husband, Jankyn, is the only husband that she actually fell in love with.…

A bland and somewhat vague definition of a leader is “A person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Merriam-Webster). This definition can be divided into two more specific categories which consist of being a bad leader or great one. Tailoring the argument would consist of specifying the definition of a great leader, an example of this would be “Leadership is the art of leading others to deliberately create a result that wouldn’t have happened otherwise”. This definition shows the mechanics behind what it takes to be a leader and how persuasive one individual can be to lead the group to good or bad decision. We see the use of good leadership in both The wife of baths tale and the life of Muhammad.…

The first statement mentions that “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is a transformation story about a flawed or ugly woman who has to be rescued or restored by the right man. However, the plot that the question has stated does not appeared in both the prologue and the tale. Even though there is an appearance of an ugly old woman in the last part of the tale, it is not that she has been rescued or restored by a man. Instead, it was more like the old woman is teaching the man that he cannot judge a person by their appearance or their class in the society. As a result, I personally agree with the second idea where it said that “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is an early tale of feminism showcasing the ways a female character gains power within a repressive,…

Jacqueline Murray, the professor of Department of History at University of Windsor, shows how women emerge in the thirteenth-century manuals as a ’marked’ category defined by their reproductive and sexual functions, viewed above all in terms of how their own sexual status (widow, wife, virgin, prostitute) contributes to the evaluation of males who commit sexual sin with them. ( 13) The Wife thinks that the virginity is not very important because our bodies were given us to use. She despises virginity but she does not tell anyone. The Wife speaks about sexuality in natural way which is very brave and unusual in her century.…

Women Vs. Men : Wife of Bath The Wife of Bath is a story from the Canterbury tales and the main focus is to tell people what women desire the most. In the story the Knight took advantage of the women (The Wife of Bath) and he has to be punished, not by the King but by the Queen. Women have never been treated the same way as men, not even in today’s time. Women were seen as the less superior than men in the story and the women was taken advantage of.…

This shows the difference between The Knight and The Miller 's Tale. In the Miller 's Tale John and Nicholas both have very rude and immature language in the way they speak to people. It is shown Chaucer prefers the more noble, classy man over what the Miller’s tale portrays which is why it’s very fitting that the narrator introduced him as the first character since he depicts what a true noble man should be during the medieval times. The Knight’s tale illustrates a perfect example of a hierarchical and patriarchal society, which also shows the how many people can change their lives and fate by their…

Inside Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales”, a reader finds their attention falling upon a rowdy, fair-faced woman, who has been married five times. She is open with her words, ideas, and sexuality. These features are simply unheard for women of her time. Her openness leads many readers to believe she is a woman beyond her time, a feminist even. However, upon further inspection one finds that the Wife of Bath is actually the embodiment of an anti-feminist, she is absurdly physically minded, and does not have an honest appearance..…
