Throughout Aravind Adiga’s novel “The White Tiger” he constantly exposes the fact that India almost all aspect of India are corrupt. Adiga focuses heavily on government’s corruption of; schools, hospitals, police, elections and many industries and how the rich are subsequently getting richer. While corruption is seen mainly from the rich Adiga shines a light on the corruption that can occur to those in the ‘darkness’. Despite corruption heavily influencing many individual’s lives, in most circumstance they do it only to succussed in life.

While people in India are “the most honest people” they are not exempt from corruption. In the case of Balram, a loyal driver was corrupt along with many drivers in the cities. They would steal petrol and sell it, they would go to corrupt machines and overcharge and they would turn their “master car into a private taxi.” Most of the corruption seen by drivers like Balram was to get extra money. However despite this corruption Balram states that “if you left a bag full of money in a Mumbai taxi … the driver would turn it in.” Through the author is showing two polar natures of a driver he is expressing how their corruption is not as obvious and extreme as taking the money, rather slowly taking their masters money. Additionally another example of corruption can be seen in the family unit as many families would marry off their children in order to receive money and gift, which Balram Grandmother Kushum often did. Despite being in the darkness of India Kushum was also not exempt from corruption which manifest itself in the form of blackmail as she would often send threats to Balram if he failed to send money. This shows how Kuhsum and many others would even exploit their families and others for a small monetary gain. Ultimately those in a lower caste resort to much more subtle techniques of corruption from blackmail to scams, showing how prevalent corruption is
