The student passes a bulletin board, where school-sponsored clubs hang announcements for a Habitat for Humanity trip to an inner-city neighborhood, a coat drive for homeless men and women in the city, and a literacy campaign through which White high school students read to students at an inner-city elementary school. The White student arrives as his first period math class. Before the class begins, students read the morning announcements over the school’s public address. One of the announcements informs students about an upcoming program sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The entire school will participate in the ADL program titled “Names Can Really Hurt.” In his math class, the White student sits two rows away from one of eight Black students in the school of 1,012 pupils.
