The white savior, the white Messiah complex and the white man’s burden are all names for a common trope in books and movies which are basically about a white person who saves a colored person or solve their problems, like in “Dances With Wolves”, “The Blind Side” or “Avatar”. In some cases the white saviors shows up as movements like the colonial project, Out of Africa, The Constant Gardener and Kony 2012. A lot of white people don’t see it as a problem as long as they have good intentions and wanting to help, so they are looking at it through the white savior lens, and they feel like haters are trying to take away their heroism, but in the lens of an African person or any minority they might find it offensive. So find out where encouragement of white saviorhood comes from, so that you can recognize when it’s happening and understand why is it harmful. Also to be more sensitive about how other races would translate their help, is it just for show or to actually understand and appropriately approach the issue and take some serious actions after taking permission from the people who are really concerned and may get effected. Usually these actions that need to be taken to solve the problem are more complicated and deeper than just slogans or videos, plus they may require sacrifice from the person or country to actually make a difference weather that sacrifice is money, time, natural energy and a lot of hard work. Not just by taking a picture with some African babies or by repeating slogans. So white people need to stop assuming that they can help everybody and listen to the matters that actually concern them, and you still can help but you don’t need to be the center of it.
