The White House may be the most iconic building in the United States. From the time the first cornerstone was laid in 1792, many renovations, influenced by several U.S. presidents, have taken place. The necessary changes that were made, included the entire interior reconstruction, new rooms to address expanding White House Staff, and the utilization of modern building materials. From its original construction, it has progressed and changed and will progress more. Some people may ask, what is in the White House. The White House has several features. One purpose is to serve as the residence of the presidential family. At different times in history, it has been called, the “President’s Palace,” or the “Executive Mansion.” …show more content…
Before construction began, an artist and engineer, Pierre L’enfant, worked with George Washington on the plans. The first cornerstone was laid in 1792.The first to president to actually live in the White House was John Adams. He moved in in 1800. The White House was the largest house in the United States until after the Civil War. The construction of the White House was not a small task. It cost $232,272 to build. That would be equal to about $3,350,750 today. Much of the construction was done by immigrants. The sandstone walls were built by Scottish immigrants. The sandstone used in the construction came from Virginia. The pillars were lined with a less expensive brick to save some costs. It took 570 gallons of paint to cover the White House. The original White House was burned down during the War of 1812 and had to be rebuilt. This was payback for the United States burning down some Canadian government buildings in York, Ontario. It also had several other renovations. In 1902, President Roosevelt began a major renovation. This included moving the president’s office to the West Wing. Less than 50 years after this renovation, the White House was showing major signs of structural weakness. President Harry S Truman had the White House renovated again. He removed everything except for the outer walls. During the 19th century there were various proposal to make an entirely new house, but these plans were never realized.
