Does money ever feel like it is the only thing that matters? Well, I know that some people people do but Ellen Raskin’s novel “The Westing Game” shows the exact opposite. She does this by creating three characters that learn that money is not as valuable as a true and loving family with. Turtle learns that family is worth more than money. She thinks this way because of how mean her family actually is and how much she longs for a new one. Her mother, Grace, treats her horribly. She makes Turtle sleep in a closet, she doesn’t talk to her unless it is in her best interest, and generally doesn’t think she is there. The only person that talks to Turtle in her family is Angela the ‘perfect daughter.’ Angela and Turtle have a more family-like relationship. Crow was forcing her daughter, Violet, to marry a corrupt politician for more fame for the family. This forcefulness brought her daughter to commit suicide. This left only Sam Westing and Crow for the Westing family. Crow eventually left the Westing family. Then 16 heirs to Sam Westing and their families went to Sunset Towers, including Crow. Crow had become the cleaning lady and found Angela, Turtle’s sister. She saw her late daughter Violet Westing in Angela and became attached. She started to create a family like bond with Angela when Angela ran from Judge Ford’s party into the kitchen about to cry. Crow was there cleaning and wanted to hug Angela saying “It’s alright, go ahead and cry,” but she just ended up saying “Here,” giving Angela a towel. She also found true love in Otis Amber, another one of the heirs. Otis was hired by Sam Westing to watch and keep Crow safe. They eventually came closer and closer as Otis worked the soup kitchen with Crow every night and then eventually became husband and
