In the film I could notice that from the first scene on the Jets did not fight with any other racial group than with the Puertoricans nor they fought amongst themselves. Although the musical and movie were based on the fights that this two specific races had, there is not even one character representing any other racial background. As stated by Sandoval-Sanchez the other races like blacks were not taken into consideration in this “anthology of Americans.” This seems to be a pattern that new immigrants had to fight for them to be able to maintain their cultural practices and traditions. At the moment of the creation of West Side Story there were many incidents about gangs’ rivalry and high incidents in which gangs of opposite races where either injured or loss their lives.
