Our Town Colby Analysis

Small Town Living Both Colby and Our Town are both small towns, but they both have their differences. Our Town has a population “within the city limits: 2, 640” (Wilder 15) and colby has a population of 5,419. Our Town is a little bit smaller than Colby, but they both show similar characteristics. In small towns everyone knows almost everyone who lives there. This can be good and bad because with everyone knowing each other, news spread like a wildfire. If people do something big everyone will know about it usually within the next week. Everyone knowing each other means that everyone helps others in time of need. A big part of this is the many churches around town. A big part of the community is everyone attending church. In both towns there …show more content…
This is the case for love and marriage in Our Town and Colby. Marriage has always been more about the girl than the guy. The girl gets all fancy with her hair and nails done and a fancy dress. She has all her girl friends spend the day with her before the ceremony and they get ready together. Where the guy does dress up in a tuxedo but it’s never as important as the girl and her dress. The girls get ready all morning and “the groom can’t see his bride on his wedding day, not until he sees her in church” (Wilder 36). This is the same for Our Town and Colby. It’s a tradition in most places that the groom doesn’t see his bride until they walk into the wedding ceremony. In Our Town you could wait more than just that day to see your bride. Some met their spouse on the day of the wedding as they were walking down the aisle. In Colby this never happens, people usually date their spouse for at least six months before they get engaged and married. …show more content…
This can be bad and good. With everyone knowing each other news spread very fast and everyone knows everything about each other. The advantage with small towns is that everyone helps each other in times of need. These things are true for all towns but not all small towns are the same. For example, in Colby and Our Town people’s way of life is different. In Our Town people are asleep by 8:30 so that they can wake up early the next morning and go to school and work. In Colby people are up at all hours of the night doing things. In Colby and Our Town marriage traditions are also the same. Grooms can’t see their bride until they enter the church on the wedding day. With this being said it is evident that the wedding day is more important for the girl than the guy. Girls wear a big dress and do their nails and hair, while guys wear a tux and then return it after the wedding is over. People in Our Town sometimes marry people they don’t know but in Colby people don’t do that. They date their spouse for at least six months before getting married. Our Town and Colby have one thing in common that will probably never change. This is the fact that people live their whole life to look back and realize that they didn’t have as much time as they thought. People realize they should have spent their time doing something better. END

The Midwest, a place in the world where communities are closely aligned to one another. These small, rural communities rely on every person in order to create that community. It seems as though that knowing everyone around the small communities was what made a person successful in life. Additionally, these communities valued hard-work and honesty when it came with almost everything they did in their lives; whether it was working in the farmlands or spreading information throughout the communities about certain people to look out for, it was hard to be anonymous inside the city. Unfortunately, there are sometimes citizens that do not look forward to that kind of lifestyle.…

In the play “Our Town” the idea of marriage is seen in many different lights, and as is often in the world, it can get a little confusing. One view, held by the Stage Manager himself, is one of simplicity. Meaning that, the ceremony itself, is short and sweet, and the two live side by side the rest of their lives. How different that is from today’s views. All these people, getting the nicest and grandest flowers and getting the monkey's uncle to come to the wedding, all to cut it off three months later because they aren't “compatible”.…

A community environment serves an important function in shaping our personal development and belief system. The community an individual grows up in says a lot about that individual as a person. With strengths, comes weaknesses and every community differs in many ways. The community I grew up in may differ from the community others lived in, and that’s what makes us all unique and different from one another. No matter if you live on Grand View Drive or you live on the south side of Chicago each community has its different problems, and just because someone may live in a different neighborhood than you doesn’t mean you are complete polar opposites it just means you experience obstacles differently in your daily routine and that is completely…

As we embark on our journey to understand human behavior, social workers must give consideration to the communities in which the people live. Individual behavior is influenced by the interactions which takes place between the micro, macro and macro systems found within these particular settings. The interrelatedness among these social systems provides social workers with a variety of tools for improving the many exchanges which occur between the individuals and the social systems. Since human behavior does not exist in a vacuum; an essential element in reshaping behavior must be found within the communities where they either reside or have a membership to. Special attention must also be given to how the particular individual defines his own community membership.…

When one thinks of two towns, most people generally assume that these towns share practically no differences whatsoever. However, if one can properly analyze two specific towns, Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and Bethlehem, New York, their assumptions would quickly be proven wrong because of the varying differences of these towns. Among these differences are the environments of the towns, as well as the effect of technology on the two contrasting communities. Bethlehem is a rural community that resembles a town of the past, while Bensalem is a suburban township that represents the modern standard of a society.…

Before moving to the city of Portsmouth, Virginia I grew up in the small country town of Lavaca, Arkansas. While some aspects of living in the city is consistent with living in the country, the city lifestyle offers more convenience, experiences, and opportunities. Growing up in a town with a population of around two thousand people means being a part of a tight knit community. I was surprised to find that same sense of community living in a town of over ninety-six thousand people. I have built friendly relationships with many of my neighbors and attended community events and gatherings in the same way I did living in the country.…

In the nine-day span of July 12 to 20, more than seven-hundred weather-related deaths were recorded.3 Through research for his 2002 book, Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, Eric Klinenberg discovered a direct connection between a neighborhood’s poverty level and heat-related body count.4 This realization opens the door for an even greater…
