Reflection On Wellness Assessment

Improved Essays
Wellness Assessment and Planning It is quite often that a person does not truly recognize their wellness needs. People also tend to ignore signs and symptoms of a potential problem. Burnout and compassion fatigue are two issues faced by those in the helping professions that are often not recognized before they become a problem. I am an example of all of this.
Personal Assessment The Stress Reaction Inventory (SRI) was truly eye opening. I have been working in the law enforcement field for the last 18.5 years. Psychiatric Screenings for the local hospital system and mentoring adolescent males in a group home setting have recently been added to my responsibilities. I am married with two teenagers, three dogs, and an aquarium full of fish.

After the suicide of an officer in 2002 when there was no EAP, the police department and the city began to recognize that those experiencing difficulties may need immediate access to mental health professionals. All co-pays associated with seeking counseling are covered by the city, and a counselor is contracted and kept on retainer for such instances. After looking at the results of the Wellness Assessment, I contacted my supervisor on October 12, 2016 at 9:55am and discussed the results and implications thereof. At approximately 10:45am, I was contacted with date and time of first appointment. Granello & Young (2002) list five reasons for seeking individual counseling: experience the role of client, to feel the impact of intervention and techniques, increase personal growth and emotional and mental health, recognize that personal counseling might help reduce stress when you begin practicing, and to deal with mental health problems that may be affecting ability to provide support to clients (p. 441). Increasing personal growth, increasing emotional and mental health, reduction of stress, and addressing any potential mental health concerns are my primary goals for individual counseling. The first appointment with the counselor took place on October 13, 2016, at 8:45am. As a Christian, it is a relief that the counselor is a Christian counselor who will see that spiritual needs are adequately addressed throughout the counseling process. I also discovered during the first appointment that the counselor is a graduate of the Liberty University Professional Counseling program, adding to the sense of comfort while in the office. The wellness strategies already discussed are: make a point to have daily quiet time, monitor inner dialog, make time for myself, and make it a point to spend time with my spouse away from our home. What are the barriers to receiving services and how might a human service professional counter them? There can be many different barriers to receiving services such as the clients view of their situation, embarrassment, reluctance to admit they have a problem, cultural differences, and client’s perception of helpers are some of the barriers that prevent people from seeking help. One problem with in Christianity is the lack of knowledge when it comes to Scripture and theology. Many just accept what they are told when it comes to theology and Scripture instead of taking time to actually learn about theology and how to properly quote or use Scripture while they are talking. Due to this, Scripture can be misused or misquoted and shows a lack of knowledge of the users part. The author’s advice to make sure a person is adequately trained in these areas is not only necessary but also…

When it comes to my present activity level, a lot has changed from the beginning of this class. I have to say that before this class I never made physical activity a priority in my day. I counted walking to class as a form of physical activity, which it was, but not enough. I am a lazy person and would rather be laying around watching Netflix than going to the gym.…
