Personal Narrative: King Midas

The week of teaching language arts was very exhilarating and exciting and other times it was nerve racking and exhausting. The responsibility of helping children build the fundamentals of reading and writing can be daunting. I knew what I wanted to teach and how I wanted to approach each lesson, but how to do it successfully worried me. The first day I had to take over language arts was not a day I was looking forward too. My mentor teacher had been the one that the students follow, the one they turn to for their questions and concerns. They never doubted what she said. What she wrote, what she said, and read, it was just the way things were. How could I help my students turn that trust and confidence towards me? The second day, third day, and even the last days are always the easiest, the first day is the one that usually knocks you down. I must admit it went well. The students were engaged and I only had a couple of behavior or classroom management issues. The students seem to look towards me as a teacher and not just that student intern. …show more content…
This whole week we read and reread the story of King Midas. We learn about what lessons that King Midas learned. The holiday season is coming up and I thought this story of King Midas and the lesson of greed really fell nicely with the social lessons that my students must learn. When I ask my students, what is greed and how do you thing greed can affect their family and friends, my students gave some wonderful answers. They saw the correlation of how having everything you want can be disastrous. They saw that personal relationships and the love of family and friends outweigh material possessions. This was the entire theme of my week of teaching language arts. We tied this theme into several read alouds I did throughout the week (King Midas and the Golden Touch by Al Perkins, and I Wish That I Had Duck Feet by Dr. Seuss.
