The Webinar, The Team Equation

The webinar, The Team Equation: Managing Teams that Deliver, had a very interesting viewpoint on how to make teams successful and stick together. There are a few things I have learned from this webinar. One thing I have learned comes from the well-known quote “Two heads are better than one.” I have always thought that this just meant two heads, no matter what two heads they were, are always better than one. However they make a very good point in this webinar that the two heads should be different heads in order to be successful. If you have two similar heads thinking together, it is ultimately the same head. When you bring two heads into the equation, it helps provide a different perspective to what people are thinking. Angelia, right off the bat, says, “Teamwork is not easy.” As most people known from their own experiences, this is very true. Mary later goes on in the webinar to discuss three fatal mistakes people make when forming teams. Her three fatal mistakes are that we assemble people who are just like us, we don’t set up a foundation to do the work, and we don’t set up and accountability structure. Most of us tend to assemble teams that are just like us because we can understand them better than people that we are nothing like. However for teams, diversity is a must to be …show more content…
Mary covered some very good points throughout the webinar. One thing that I would like to say about the webinar as a whole is that not everyone will be cooperative in team activities. She talked about “nasty team members” very briefly. I felt like this should have been talked about a little bit more because I do not believe that there is a perfect team out there. You aren’t going to always have the perfect diversity, people, or tasks at hand in order for teams to be super successful. There are always going to be flaws. I also think it could have been beneficial to talk about what to do if team conflict does occur. She reinforced what we should do when we get a team, but in reality I feel like there is almost always going to be conflict that arises. This webinar was a very interesting one to listen to. Mary laid out a lot of information on how to build a successful team. This fits in with any management class because as managers we need to learn how to work with others as best as we can. Team work is never easy but if we listen to Mary’s advice, we can learn how to build some pretty great

Furthermore, cohesive teams tend to be more productive and also vice versa. Team leaders can use the following methods to create group cohesion: focus on the similarities between team members, create challenges which require teamwork, create easy ways for the team to be close, and put a positive spin on the team’s performance. Accountability, unity, and intentionality are fundamental elements of a successful team. All three of these elements are interdependent on each other, yet are significant on their own. For these elements to work, each member of a team must depend on each other’s contribution, but not rely on one member to do all the work. As well, an intentional goal must be set for all members to unify the same mentality. In my own experience with the Buckeye Twirl baton team, we fail to perform as a team and work as individuals.…

I have discovered the areas that I have been successful in as well as the many areas that I will need to make improvements. For example, prior to this class I had no knowledge of the X and Y theories. Now I realize that I operated with the mindset of a theory X manager and had the same thought process about all employees collectively, which in return made me less effective and resulted in not reaching maximum production. I currently will apply this knowledge to communicate more effectively with my current managers and to better recognize what theory they most resemble and why they interact with me on the level that they do. This class will also assist me greatly in my future goals to own a business in which I possibly will have to manage multiple people in different departments.…

If you and your team work together in the best possible way you will be able to accomplish things you would have never even thought possible. The book said that none of us is as smart as all of us. I one hundred percent agree with that. As much as some people like working alone and by themselves, I don’t think that they can ever get as much done as a team could, by working together. Teamwork can be very underestimated, especially if you don’t know your own potential or have trouble seeing what can get accomplished.…

Apparently, the interactive nature of a knowledgebased society and a knowledge-based economy mandates the ability to collaborate. “Those who have successfully created cultures of innovation and creativity suggest that one key is to… embrace participation, collaboration, networking…” Collaboration and teamwork is such a key element to many aspects of life - it appears everywhere, and this skill comes in handy later in life in many situations, maybe even tomorrow. It took me a slight bit of willingness to give collaboration and teamwork a shot and understand what is behind it, it’s not just wanted or unwanted socialization, like I thought before, it might be the key to building a business empire, for all I can know. In the modern age, when a lot of the things are already invented, it’s hard to come up with something new on your own. It’s the innovation that rarely takes place in just one head.…
