M2 Essay Quiz Steven Carriere Excelsior College Explain the criminological, sociological, and psychological theories that may contribute to domestic terrorism. Study data provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations show interesting sociological patterns between male and female domestic terrorists from the 1960’s and 1970’s decades. Right wing terrorists typically were males with blue collar employment experience and some college education, with stark social class differences in the leadership structure of right-wing groups, while left wing terrorists were more female oriented and held a higher level of college education completion than right wingers (Victoroff, 2005; Handler, 1990). Examples of the differences between right-wing and left-wing domestic terror incidents involving U.S. citizens include Patricia Hearst, who was kidnapped in 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) and eventually joined forces before most of her captors were killed in a shootout (Hixson, 2005). Although Timothy McVeigh was convicted for committing the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995,…

After moving to America, the Tsarnaevs felt like a targeted minority because of their faith, causing them to become more devout Muslims. In the US, social media and internet access allowed them to have close contact with members and groups of Islamic fundamentalism, and it played a deep role in their radicalization. The terrorism committed was not just for religious beliefs, but it was targeted at the U.S. because they harmed the lives of so many Muslims in the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War. The Boston Marathon Bombings established a new type of terrorism, influenced by exposure to jihad and Islamic fundamentalists abroad, the marginalization of the Tsarnaevs in the US, and the ability of social media to aid…

Weathermen, often referred to as weather underground, were a militant radical left wing group in the 60’s that sought to overthrow the U.S. government and tried to get their point across by bombing government property such as bathrooms in places like the pentagon, state department building and more. They were part of the “counterculture” idea which went against cultural norms and rules. Even though the weatherman brought a lot of attention to the counterculture movement by taking action and making their bold statement, they gave counterculture a bad name, they used very violent ways to get their point across that might not have been necessary, and in the end they didn't achieve anything. The Weathermen gave the counterculture movement a bad…

Terrorist, a word that means many different things to many different people, is painted by the media as an easily identifiable, one-dimensional, criminal in modern society. Google “terrorist”, and the only thing portrayed is turban wearing, automatic rifle carrying, Islamic extremist. Based on what has been learned through movies and mass media, the ability to identify a “terrorist” even when fully covered can be done based on the clothing and the surroundings in the images. American stereotypes also imply the conclusion that the location is in the Middle East, therefore, they have to be terrorists which also identifies them as Muslim. After 9/11 the media inundated the American public with feelings of fear and outrage perpetuating islamophobia.…

This means that many left-leaning Americans view the United States as the villain because of how powerful it is compared to Middle East nations. Another possible reason for their views on terrorism could come from how they view the human intent. They are more likely to believe that people are naturally good, and are turned evil by the circumstances around them, so instead of invading their countries and killing them, we should find ways to help them. People on the right side of the political spectrum have opposing views to those on the left. These people believe that most terrorist attacks being carried out are by Islamic terrorists.…
