I have given a survey to my closest friends and taken the same one myself to better understand who I am and to develop a self concept. I learned quite a bit about myself and my friends during the exercise.
My responses showed me that I can be fun and energetic and that I work well with others. This is somewhat surprising as I am a introvert. However, even though I work well in groups, I have a hard time trusting people I have not gotten to know. I think I have always been aware of who I am and how I act.
It is interesting to see these results because it reminds me how much I change throughout the years. Many things in a person’s life can affect who they are, and I think school is what had the biggest impact. During my toddler years, my mom would call me her “best friend” and her “little ray of sunshine” because I was always smiling and I never knew a stranger. This all changed when I entered the fourth grade and discovered just how mean girls can be, and how devastating it can be to not feel accepted. A year ago I decided to to take the Myers-Briggs personality test to determine who I really am. It came back positive for an INFJ, which is me exactly. I know have a better understanding for who I am and why I act the way I do, or react to certain situations differently from other people. Learning about yourself makes you feel a little less weird, and taking personality tests makes it easier to be yourself. I has definitely increased my communication skills. Before I understood who I am, I had a horribly hard time talking to other people, but now I have learned how to become comfortable speaking and having one-on-one conversations with others.
