In the analyzations of the two essays “ The Way We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, I found that Ericsson’s essay seems to more effectively convey the meaning of avoiding the truth better than Hughes’s essay. While reading Ericsson’s essay I found that she portrays her purpose through relatable events that readers like me have dealt with before throughout life and by explaining how we avoid telling the truth by going into depth of the many types of the lies people tell. In Hughes’s essay I found he portrays his purpose through more of a pathos perspective, using emotions by sharing a personal event that happened to him.
In Ericsson’s essay, she begins it by sharing her own personal experiences that happened …show more content…
For example, if she would have told the bank that she had not even written out the che check yet, the bank would have charged her a $60 fee. If she would have told her client that she was late because she was tired and did not feel like being on time more than likely the client would have fired her. Erisson chooses to lie to her husband because she could tell he have had a bad day and did not want to make his day any worse. Ericsson lied to her friend so she would not take it personally and get upset with her.
Likewise, to get her point across even more she adds the definition of “lie”. In the Webster’s dictionary the definition of a lie is specific: 1. a false statement or action, especially made with the intent to deceive; 2. Anything that gives or is meant to give a false impression. The two children left were Hughes and another boy named Westley. Hughes describes during this time he was waiting to see Jesus. After several minutes, Westley brought up about just standing up from the bench and together they would be saved. After saying this Westley stood up and he was saved, which left Hughes by himself. Once he was left by himself all the church members started singing and praying for him, he still sat there waiting to see Jesus, but he never came. After not seeing Jesus for so long he began contemplating what God would think about Westley and realized that God had not struck him dead for lying. Hughes then decided to lie like Westley had to save himself from being looked down upon. After he stood up and was deemed “saved”, the church members “blessed the children in the name of God” and sang.
