The Way We Lie And Salvation Analysis

In the analyzations of the two essays “ The Way We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, I found that Ericsson’s essay seems to more effectively convey the meaning of avoiding the truth better than Hughes’s essay. While reading Ericsson’s essay I found that she portrays her purpose through relatable events that readers like me have dealt with before throughout life and by explaining how we avoid telling the truth by going into depth of the many types of the lies people tell. In Hughes’s essay I found he portrays his purpose through more of a pathos perspective, using emotions by sharing a personal event that happened to him.
In Ericsson’s essay, she begins it by sharing her own personal experiences that happened

For example, if she would have told the bank that she had not even written out the che check yet, the bank would have charged her a $60 fee. If she would have told her client that she was late because she was tired and did not feel like being on time more than likely the client would have fired her. Erisson chooses to lie to her husband because she could tell he have had a bad day and did not want to make his day any worse. Ericsson lied to her friend so she would not take it personally and get upset with her.
Likewise, to get her point across even more she adds the definition of “lie”. In the Webster’s dictionary the definition of a lie is specific: 1. a false statement or action, especially made with the intent to deceive; 2. Anything that gives or is meant to give a false impression. With this definition it allows people to lie in many different ways which helped Ericsson to go into much greater detail by explaining these different

The two children left were Hughes and another boy named Westley. Hughes describes during this time he was waiting to see Jesus. After several minutes, Westley brought up about just standing up from the bench and together they would be saved. After saying this Westley stood up and he was saved, which left Hughes by himself. Once he was left by himself all the church members started singing and praying for him, he still sat there waiting to see Jesus, but he never came. After not seeing Jesus for so long he began contemplating what God would think about Westley and realized that God had not struck him dead for lying. Hughes then decided to lie like Westley had to save himself from being looked down upon. After he stood up and was deemed “saved”, the church members “blessed the children in the name of God” and sang. After the special event for the children was over, Hughes explains that he went home and cried because he had lied to his aunt and the church members that he had been saved but in reality because he had not seen Jesus, he stopped believing that their was a

Hence, she decided then to completely tell the truth for an entire week realizing, lying was somewhat of a natural instinct that many had to do at least once. Furthermore, Stephanie then began to categorize different types of lies in order to justify the reason as to why one would lie in that given type of way. Therefore, she placed lies in categories such as deflecting, white lies, omissions, facades, dismissal, ignoring the plain facts, group think, delusion, and out-and-out lies. In the end, she had gotten fired from her job, added stress to her personal relationship, and hurt others.…

In the story On the Internet There’s No Place to Hide by Jonathan Koppell and The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, both of those essays are out to have a few similarities hencing that if one would lie and be unfaithful, one would eventually end up getting caught. Everything nowadays seems to be put out in social media and how Koppell’s story says, there is no place to hide from there. There is a few ways to lie as well as Ericsson’s story says, but lying is not as easy as it looks. Both these stories seem to have a profound impact on gender roles because if a woman is caught being unfaithful, she is often viewed as a slut, rather than if the man gets caught, most of the time he is giving credit for it. In today’s media, just by glimpsing…

The Wesley Understand of Human Salvation What is salvation? The salvation which is here spoken of is not what is frequently understood by the word, the going to heaven, eternal happiness. …… It is not a blessing which lies on the other side of death….it is a present thing….[it] might be extended to the entire work of God , from the first dawning of grace in the soul till it is consummated in glory (Maddox 143). Albert C. Outler noted that this sermon has the most extensive history of oral preaching behind it of any of the written sermons; therefore, he recommended it as the best single essay by which to judge Wesley’s soteriology (Maddox 323). Wesley denied here that human salvation is only a future hope; Wesley was also denying that it is…

Kid after kid went to the alter crying, weeping for joy, while Hughes was left sitting with Westley. He wanted so badly to see God so he could could with all the other kids. He felt like he was the “one little lamb left out in the cold” (Hughes 299) that the preacher was talking about. Hughes already felt pressured to see God and be saved, and even more stress was added when the preacher talked of them coming to the mourners’ bench. Then, “Finally all the young people had gone to the alter and were saved, but one boy and me.”…

Ericsson states “We lie. We all do. As a rounder’s son, many can tell by looking at this passage that his dad was heavily involved in church. Westley was taught in church, but he never truly understood what it meant to receive Jesus Christ as a Savior. From Westley’s perspective, I consider that since he was a rounder’s son, his dad had a high expectation of him. Deceiving people wasn’t the right route to go on in order to receive salvation. The enemy used different tactics in Westley to deceive his dad and the entire congregation during the church revival.…

Although, lying can be used to disclose something with a positive outcome; to give someone a delightful surprise, however most of the time lying never has a positive outcome. In The Girl on the Train, author Paula Hawkins, exposes the reader to the ways lying impacts someone’s communication, creates distance, clouds the truth, forms obstacles and the way which it breaks up multiple relationships. Instead of using lying in a malicious way, it can be used to happily surprise someone. In this way, we can eliminate the negative uses of lying, and increase the positive aspects of it so people are not negatively affected by…
