The Bible states, “but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8, New International Version), so all must be careful about what they say and be open to accountability to how they speak. One that does not care for accountability does not care to ever improve their communication; this defiance must be avoided at all cost for growth in communication to occur. That we must be constantly mindful of the nonverbal queue’s we communicate and that everyone will take things differently when we are nonchalant with our communication. Families and the system that they are in are very fragile to the nonverbal queues. As Balswick points out, “When family members communicate and express themselves in their own unique ways, family relationships grow and deepen” (Balswick & Balswick, 2007, p. 237). Family communication is where we should focus to build upon first, and then expand out from there. All of this communication must be immersed in active listening for us to be effective, without it will forever be one sided from both sides with no development ever happening. As the saying goes, God gave humanity two ears and one mouth, to listen first and carefully before speaking. The nonverbal should be listened to just as much as the verbal, this is true listening. And all within the realm of being openness and accountability after communication takes place.
