The Watsons Go To Birmingham By Christopher Paul Curtis: An Analysis

In the novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny treats people better than Byron does because Byron was beating up Larry Dunn, Kenny shares his lunch and his gloves with Rufus and Byron had his lips stuck to a mirror and Kenny was trying to help him but if it was Kenny said “If he was stuck Byron would have done some cruel stuff to him”. Kenny tricked his mom into getting him another pair of leather gloves so he and his friend Rufus could both have a full pair. He told his mom he lost his gloves so he got a new pair and when he got the gloves that was the last pair he was getting for the rest of the year so his mom tied the gloves to his jacket so that he would not lose them. They then were sitting next to each other at lunch and in class. When at lunch Rufus did not have one so every day Kenny would share his apple and sandwich with him. Later on through there friendship they would play in the snow during lunch and after school. Rufus could not play because he did not have gloves. Kenny then started sharing his gloves with Rufus he even tricked his mom into thinking he lost his gloves so that him and Rufus could have a full pair. Kenny and Byron were told to to scrape the ice off the windows in the first paragraph. Byron was not scraping the ice and was calling Kenny’s name and saying help but Kenny did not trust him because he thought Byron was going to mess with him. Soon later Kenny finally went to see what was wrong and Byron’s lips were stuck to the mirror. Byron is so obsessed with himself that he kissed his own reflection and his lips stuck there. Kenny was trying to help Byron and Kenny said that if it were him stuck to the mirror “That Byron would have done some real cruel stuff to
