The family travels down to the most racist part of the country, Birmingham, Alabama. Byron realizes that his younger brother and sister aren’t safe in the new kind of city. Byron had tucked the blanket between him and Dad down into the cushion of the couch to make sure he couldn’t be touched.”(2). The Watson family is squeezing onto the couch trying to stay warm from the freezing temperatures of the outside. Even though it will be much warmer to snuggle up with his family, Byron decides he wants to act “cool” and not get near or touch his family members. …show more content…

To begin, 1963 affected the Watson's mindset. An example of how discrimination affected the Watson's mindset can be seen on page 146. Standing in the Appalachian mountains, Byron states, "Man, they got crackers and rednecks up here that ain't never seen no negroes before. If they caught your butt out here like this they would hang you now..." Jem Finch…

The book “That Was Then,This Is Now” had many problems in it including towards the end. Mark and Bryon got into a fight because Mark sold “Acid” to M&M. In my opinion I agree with Byron. He done the right thing to call the cops on Mark its like a wake up call to Mark to no be so reckless to everything such as selling drug to M&M.That had the most effect on the characters such as Carthy,Byron, and Mr.Charles. Also Mark need to be woken up from that experience.…
