The Warehouse Boom Summary

“WAREHOUSE EMPIRE” SUMMARY AND REFLECTIONS. This article by Jessica Garrison, is an illustration of the reality we live in and yet, sometimes we don’t notice it. I think they couldn’t have chosen a better name for this article because it describes things the way they are: An empire of warehouses. The article talks about how warehouses are taking over Moreno Valley and Miraloma cities in the inland empire and how that is related in some cases to corruption. One case mentioned, is the one of councilman Marcelo Co, who was arrested after a sting operation. He was caught on tape taking 2.36 million dollars from a FBI undercover agent as a payment for his vote on land-use plans. Although, as stated in the article, a fifth of the population in Moreno …show more content…
Despite of these respiratory problems mentioned “yet, time and again, records and interviews show, officials failed to consider health impacts when approving warehouses.” In consequence Mira Loma residents had to be provided with home air filters. Dozens of warehouses were approved to be built in Mira Loma between 1987 and 2000 without having required a detailed environmental study. To begin with my reflections, I would like to cite this phrase from the article “The warehouse boom has been propelled by two stark factors: poverty and money.” These two cities are beneficiated in a way with the warehouse empire because it brings jobs and it helps the economy to grow. People accept this circumstances because of poverty, when we hear or think about a new warehouse we don’t think about air pollution, we think about jobs, it is sad that we accept this conditions because of necessity. It is incredible how these warehouses are still being approved and how many more are about to come, if you drive from Perris to Moreno Valley by Perris Blvd. you would be amazed how many new warehouses are under construction. As you mention in the assignment description, we need to involve and be informed

To this day, despite comprising a significantly lower percentage of California in general, people of color comprise 82.5% of Richmond’s population, and many of these residents live in poverty. These factors make the residents of the city more vulnerable to Chevron’s exploitation of their land and labor. Also, local zoning decisions have placed tremendous sources of toxins nearest these communities, in a classic display of environmental racism. Of course, in an example of circular causation, the exposure to pollution in these areas can only decrease the value of these homes, which has obviously not helped improve the welfare or wealth of these residents, as they lack the assets to relocate to areas with cleaner air. This vicious cycle of segregation, environmental racism, and impoverishment has cumulative effects.…

This is sad. Not only is this sad, but this is also the basic root of our environmental problems, and will be until the ideologies of modern peoples change. The mall represents the lust for new and plenty; the major problem with this thought is that is not how the environmental world works. There will be times of plenty, but those times will not be always and forever; and people of today do not understand that the world is a give and take place. People’s ideas will need to change about how the world works, however until then the…

Air pollution is caused by air gasses that emit into the atmosphere, ultimately contaminating the air. The central valley of California is notorious for poor air quality, it has even been referred to as ‘America’s toxic agricultural capital’ (Leslie, 2010). The California Central Valley is greatly focused on agriculture, it is filled with farmers who rely heavily on their crops for income, but is also composed of larger metropolitan areas like Fresno and Bakersfield.…

The sickness-saturated Mossville, Louisiana is becoming abandoned over time. In “How Pollution Killed a Louisiana Town,” by Heather Rogers, the main man she interviews is a seventy-one year old man named Allen Leblanc who is on disability and for the last decade he has refused to leave his house. He has experienced seizures, liver problems, and stroke, tremors, insomnia, fatigue, and depression (Rogers 1). Leblanc blames his health issues on the toxic emissions from the industrial plants from the neighboring town of Westlake. These facilities emit millions of pounds of toxins into the air, water, and soil each year, and Leblanc said that living in the area has “messed him up” (Rogers 1).…

A month after the switch was made, residents began to “complain about the smell and color of the new water, which [was] 70 percent harder than its previous water source” (Kennedy, 2016).
