World War 2 was a global war that occurred between 1939 and 1945. The war involved many of the world’s countries including all the superpowers. These countries formed two opposing alliances called the Axis and the Allies. The Axis were made up of Germany, Italy, Japan and other minor powers such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Thailand, Yugoslavia and Romania. The Allies, on the other hand, were made up of France, Poland, China, Soviet Union, United States and Britain (Bosworth 2002). The war was widespread with major players throwing their entire economy behind the war efforts. The war resulted in massive deaths of both combatants and civilians and is considered to be the deadliest war in the history of the world (Dear 1995).

The ideologies that led to the start of the war include anti-communism, expansionism militarism and racism. The support for communisms by Russia led to the fear of violent communist revolutions and this expansion was stopped by the Polish military. The fascism in Italy and Germany was fuelled by socialist and communist uprisings. Expansionism, which is the use of military aggression to expand a territorial base also contributed to the causes of the war. Italy’s invasion of Albania, Greece and Ethiopia provoked negative responses from the League of Nations. Japan had desires to expand its territory to include Manchuria and the republic of China. Britain asked Germany to cease fire but this was ignored. The British then declared war on Germany and initially provided limited support to the Poles. They also placed a blockade to restricted supplies of goods needed by Germany to continue its war operations. Germany retaliated by using submarines to attack Allied merchant ships. The Soviets also attacked Poland from the east and the polish army was defeated. The country was split up between the Soviets and Germany. Hitler then attempted to make peace with Britain and France but demanded that the fate of Poland could only be decided by Germany and the Soviet Union.
