June 1940, Great Britain is the last democracy in Europe fighting Hitler. America did not want to be involved in another European war, but Franklin Roosevelt believed otherwise. He decided to draft all able young men into the military, but they would only protect American territory. During this time saving the Jews and fighting against Germany was not a priority for the U.S. government, until 4 days after pearl harbor. After the attack by the Japanese, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States of America.
Before Hitler declared war slightly more than half of all immigrants coming to the United States were Jewish, most of them were refugees from Europe. However, after America entered the war hardly any of the Jewish immigrants made it in and this was right at the time when Germany started killing the Jews of Europe. America’s state department policies had made it very hard for refugees to obtain entry visas, but despite all obstacles more than 200,000 Jews found refuge in the United States. Today the U.S. takes about 70,000 refugees from all around the world each year, but it is more difficult to resettle refugees from Syria because of terrorism. So out of 4 Million Syrian refugees America has taken fewer than 1,000. There are differences between then and now, but there are disturbing similarities between the events occurring today and the events during the Holocaust.
