The cold war was a clear representation of the growing tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States. The starting of the cold war can be marked as the time period after WWII. After the war the world’s two biggest superpowers- The United States and The Soviet Union, had two opposing ideals. The Soviet Union followed a communist government and the United States followed a democratic capitalist government. Due to this ongoing rivalry, the US adopted a policy of containment. The main purpose of the policy of containment was to prevent the capabilities of communism from spreading to the surrounding nations. The Truman doctrine occurred during the early part of the cold war and was agreed upon in congress. The Truman doctrine did not only provide economic assistance but it also provided military and political assistance. The Truman doctrine was something different compared to how the United States handled foreign affairs because usually the United States tried to steer clear of issues that would cause them to not enter into the war. The Truman Doctrine increased the conflict with the Soviet Union because by helping Greece they are trying to control another nation so they do not fall into the communist rule. Greece was in close proximity to the Soviet Union, so by having control over it would allow the United States to have easy access to the Soviet Union’s territory. By having access to the Soviet Union, the United States can have a foot in their door and decrease the spread of communism.“Greece is not a rich country. Lack of sufficient natural resources has always forced the Greek people to work hard to make both ends meet. Since 1940, this industrious and peace loving country has suffered invasion, four years of cruel enemy occupation, and bitter internal strife.” This quote is from Harry Truman 's address before the joint decision made by congress. This quote is trying to persuade congress that Greece needs the support of America.
