The American Civil War

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” These words quoted by Abraham Lincoln at a convention in Illinois during the Presidential race in 1858 were in part referencing the debate against slavery and unjust powerment over slaves in the Confederacy states. Lincoln was eventually elected president; however, the debate surrounding slavery continued. Because of his push to abolish slavery, brothers began fighting amongst one another in a war which was named the Civil War. The American Civil War took place from 1861 until 1865. It was a war between the brothers of the Union and the brothers of the Southern Confederacy and is arguably one of the most significant and bloodiest wars of all time. This war, the deadliest in American History, was responsible for over 620,000 soldier casualties and countless civilian deaths over its four year timespan. While noted as the bloodiest, deadliest war of all time, the Civil War was unavoidable if the Union was to defend the rights of African American slaves and their rights. In this paper, I will discuss how slavery, religion, and commerce/industry were the main factors which led up to the start of the American Civil War.

The Union and the Confederacy states had differing views and opinions on slavery. In the North, it was believed that they had this idea of free labor. (Perret 10) They believed that it would emphasize economic opportunities in the northern states. (Perret 14) These movements in the…
