Homework #2 – The War of 1812 On June 1, 1812, Madison asked Congress to declare war on Great Britain. The war of 1812 was the first war ever declared by the Congress. Madison presumed that the United States was not as independent, because it failed to protect its rights as a neutral nation. On June, 1812, the Federalists were against the start of the war, but republican wanted it to happen. The New England states disliked the idea, while the southern and western states supported it by heart. (325) No historian to this day knows why the United Stated decided to declare war on Great Britain, but there seemed to be many causes that lead to the war of 1812, and the results ended up being greater than anyone thought.
