The Waltz Research Paper

It was a Friday night in the middle of August, and the cotillion court had just finished the photoshoot. We were all by the door, preparing ourselves for the courts’ grand entrance. There was so much commotion going on, with the guys fixing each other's’ bows, the girls making sure their heels were on right and that their hair looked fine, and the last minute guests were checked in. The waltz was to be immediately followed after the entrance, so we were all getting ready to dance. This was the first dance of the night, and there was so much built up anticipation. This was the moment we were all waiting for, the moment we had practiced so tirelessly for months. Finally, the doors opened, and each pair entered the ballroom one by one, until it was my turn for my escort, Marc, and I entered and then went into our waltz position. The music commenced and the waltz began. I do not know how the dance looked, but I …show more content…
I was so honored and immediately agreed to be in the court. It was not until later that week, where I felt like backing out since I had never danced in my whole life .Although, after much consideration, I thought it would be a perfect way to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. Soon after, practices began and I felt discouraged once more. I had such a hard time keeping up with the rest of the court and learning the dances, but because of that, I practiced more and more. It was from my embarrassment and willingness to get better, that I found the strength to keep going. From those four months of practice, I not only learned how to dance the waltz, but I also learned two hip-hop dances, and how to clap the sticks for a traditional Filipino dance called Tinikling. In addition, I also got closer to the other people in the court, who soon became some of my closest friends

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

The room itself was grand and ancient, with walls of rough hewn stone, polished granite floors, and a ceiling as high as ten men. There were eight long tables, the shortest on a raised dais along the far wall, and seven more set orthogonal to the first and extending to the entry. Sheaves of wheat and sprays of spring blooms adorned the walls, and cornucopias spilled fruits, nuts and candies onto each table. There were dancers, at least a dozen of them, draped loosely in silks of gold and rich green, ribbons of fabric that swayed as they swayed, dipped as they dipped, and fluttered about them as they spun. Along walls and in corners, on tables and among revelers, they danced in time to a rhythmic tune—singly and in pairs and trios, all moving with an agile grace, seducing guests with limber acrobatics and inviting smiles.…

“Classical Fantasy” choreographed by Jerry Opdenaker, restaged and danced by Ciera Fielding, was a beautifully done piece because of it’s nod to classical ballet. The reference to classical ballet was due to both the musical choice of a composed piece lacking lyrics, and purely instrumental, as well as her outfit that consisted of a tutu, her ballet shoes with the boxed toe to allow her to go fully on point, and lastly due to her perfection of the aplomb. In this piece Ms. Fielding used indirect space by taking command of the entire floor as she pirouetted from each space to transition into the next move. While her body was very upright, and she often spun on toe, her sense of weight was light weight. It was almost like she was floating gracefully across the stage, which created a fluid effect to her sudden sense of time.…
