The parents never really disciplined their children, they always believed that rules just hindered the growth of children and made them weak. “Mom felt that Grandma Smith nagged and badgered, setting rules and punishments for breaking the rules. It drove Mom crazy, and it was the reason she never set rules for us.” (The Glass Castle 91) RoseMary hated how her mom would always make her follow rules, and nagged her about everything, she believed that was the reason she wasn't successful. Instead of using the same methods to raise her children she let them loose, and that caused them to constantly get hurt, and or in trouble. What was intriguing to most people was that even though the children made many mistakes due to the lack of supervision from their parents, they always managed to pull through. Jeannette Walls was able to captivate her readers by not by just displaying a true story, but by being able to tell her story a such an interesting fashion. She was able to tell the sad parts in her life story in an incredible way, that if not thought over the reader would think that they were happy moment. Her use of a flashback in the beginning of the book, helped readers understand that she was telling us what happened up to that point. Even though trouble surrounded the family, the children were still able to get out and lead happy lives.
