The Wacker Case: Authentic Or Fake?

Improved Essays
The Wacker case, known as one of the most infamous frauds in art history, occurred when the German art dealer Otto Wacker attempted to sell 33 forgeries as authentic Vincent van Gogh paintings in 1927. This case shed a light on the ability of forgers to deceive the general public and art experts alike. However, this case also allowed for the development of new scientific techniques, many based on chemistry, to examine and analyze paintings at the molecular level to determine whether the paintings were authentic or fake (Nelson). Art authenticators determine whether pieces of artwork are real or fake. Their jobs include authenticating works of art and other artifacts using laboratory analysis. They also must have the knowledge of the materials …show more content…
To earn the title of authentic, samples must undergo a myriad of tests. The test used in the Wacker case, mentioned above, consisted of x-raying the canvas of the paintings in question. Art experts know that van Gogh used a type of canvas that contained a different number of horizontal and vertical threads, also known as “asymmetrical” canvas. Art experts could determine the symmetry of the canvas with x-rays. Though x-rays are not the conventional method for testing the authenticity of artwork, x-rays provided the necessary information for this particular case. Invisible to the human eye, x-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation. When an x-ray machine projects radiation onto the paintings, only the materials containing heavy elements absorb it. Radiation passes through the materials containing lighter elements. Unpainted canvas consists of three layers: the ground layer, the thread layer, and the priming layer. The ground layer is the bottom layer on which all other layers sit. There is nothing particularly important about the ground layer in painting, but it comes into play later on with the radiation. The thread layer is the middle layer that consists of the threads of the canvas. A specific number of

Extraordinary details, external exactness and idealistic structure… still figures in Jan van Eyck’s work absolutely lack emotional development. Pursuing perfection in details (in pretty much everything, including human faces, fabrics, etc.) he makes the figures “locked into one place”, not giving any room for change. There is also a lot of evident symbolism in Jan van Eyck’s work, which is not so easy to spot in Rogier van der Weyden’s painting. Both of the works were painted using the “glazed oil” (layering and building on top of glazes) technique, which was Jan van Eyck’s primary medium.…

This treatment is most obvious on places like the darker sleeve of Judith. Looking up close, this area is a series of lines and blocks of lighter color placed near each other, and it is only in backing away that one can see that they are indeed the folds of her sleeve. These sorts of brushstrokes, also referred to as abbozzare, can be viewed with an X-ray of the image (Christainsen, 108). Another interesting way in which Gentileschi treats her paint is in the transparency in the fabric on the shoulder of Judith as well as the chest of her maidservant. While this could also be attributed to time as the pigments of the pain have became less potent, it still gives an interesting effect to look at.…

Cimabue and Rogier van der Weyden’s works of art deal with the same subject matter and medium, but offer distinct perspectives and analysis to the viewer. Both paintings were created within 150 years of one another so the variances in visual composition of the paintings depict how rapidly art transformed. The Cimabue’s painting is a little earlier (completed in 1280) and van der Weyden’s painting was completed between 1435 and 1440, meaning that the visual elements and composition are varied because these time periods signaled a brilliant change in art.…
