Nine million dollars in the time span of less than twelve hours. Cyber attackers are sneaky, smart, well equipped, and can hide easily. When these kinds of events are brought to the attention of the public it really opens their eyes and look for ways to protect their information on the things that they use the most, social media. Lucky there are many ways to protect your information on social media. One of the most effective ways to prevent attacks to your personal information on social media is to use common sense. Think about what you are clicking on before you click on them. A list of good tips for safe use of social media (Weisman, 2013) a few of them are “1. Don’t click on links from people you don’t know 5. Don’t befriend everyone 7. Be careful of the apps that you download onto your personal page” (p. 232) Number seven is one of the most used avenues to get into the users computer from a social media site. Once the application is downloaded to the computer, if there is any harmful software imbedded in the application then, it has free rain to everything on that computer. Another thing that can allow harmful software on the computer are young children that have not be informed on how to handle social media. Keeping your information safe from young children, is to educate them on how to properly use it (“Harvard Medical School Commentaries on Health,” 2014) Talking to Children About Social Media states “But whatever your comfort level, you need to teach your children three very important lessons about social media: Not everything you read is true, nothing you post online (or e-mail or text) is private and what you post online can stay there forever.” (para. 4,5,6,9) Teaching your children safe on social media cannot only keep their parents information safe, but also themselves safe.
