John Brown, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe were all individuals who disagreed with the institution of slavery and put an effort in order to abolish it. Each individual used distinct tactics to get the message across. Some wrote novels describing the harsh treatment slaves underwent while others lead protests and created movies. Speaking of unfair treatment, Dred Scott, a slave who worked for his master Sanford considered himself a freeman because he lived where slavery was illegal. However, when the case reached to to the Supreme Court the court declined his argument. The reasons that the Supreme Court denied his argument was because African Americans were not considered citizens and instead property. African Americans did not receive the same rights as citizens did. As a result of the court 's verdict, people from the north completely disagreed with the court 's decision thus leading Abraham Lincoln to win the elections in 1860. Most of the free states voted for him because they felt that Lincoln would take the first steps to abolish slavery. However, those living in the south feared Lincoln 's plan. The individuals that supported Texas SCV were devastated with the decision because they felt that their rights were violated. The First Amendments of the constitution prohibits abridging the freedom of speech or infringing on with the freedom of the press. According to Texas SCV, license plates are a form of individual expression therefore the court has no right to deny their proposed design. However, the court disclaimed the statement expressed above because unlike stated, license plates are not actually a form of individual expression but actually Government speech. This decision made an impact on American Society because it made individuals question whether the Government passes of individual speech as government speech. The Supreme Court used the Constitution in their power to support their decision. Individuals have the freedom of speech, yet are not able to offend others, while doing so.
