Maya contributions to astronomy influenced life in colonial America. The Maya were extremely talented astronomers who believed manifestations of the gods came in visible form through celestial bodies and their movements. Priests and other Maya astronomers studied the motion of these celestial bodies, believing they could see the gods walk across the sky. They observed and recorded the movements of the stars and planets to collect these celestial signs that foreshadowed disasters, destinies of dynasties, and the right times to plant crops, conduct rituals, fight wars, and get married. Similar to colonial Americans, the Maya craved an understanding of the universe and the creation of life which they believed they could find through carefully studying the sky.…
Source two is an excerpt from a much longer text. It is an account of smallpox and its serious impacts that it had on the Aztec civilisation from an Aztecs point of view. It was written by an unknown Aztec, most likely a male as mostly the males learned to write, during a smallpox epidemic and it has been translated into English by a historian. ‘No longer could they walk; they only lay in their abodes, in their beds. No longer could they move, no longer could they bestir themselves, no longer could they raise themselves, no longer could they stretch themselves out face down, no longer could they stretch themselves out on their backs.…
This short and cryptic text was highly regarded by European alchemists as the foundation of their art. The reason that the Emerald Tablet was so valuable is because it open the human possibility to achieve the primary goal of alchemy, the transmutation, fitting (or at least not conflicting) into the canon of the Catholic Church. The Emerald Tablet is a fundamental text for the Islamic and occidental alchemy, it is understood as the path to get the alchemical gold.…
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote two short stories: “The Birthmark” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter”; which show how nature and science can both be positive and negative. But while they are written by the same author and have the same general message, when looking deeply at the texts, a different theme and narrative can arise. The stories of “The Birthmark”, “Rappaccini’s Daughter”, and the poem “The Tables Turned” show the different facets of the struggle of science versus nature, while emphasizing the pursuit of perfection, examining outside influences, and discovering connections between the two stories. In examining the struggle of science vs. nature, we must first analyze each story by itself, and recognize its relationship.…
Banned Books No More German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg invented a highly successful printing press that the Church took advantage of to spread their beliefs in 1454 (Special Collections). The exact number of books that have been printed since then is unknown; however, Leonid Taycher, a Google software engineer, has stated on the blog “Google Books Search” that there are about 146 million “printed and bound” books. Like people, not all books are the same and each one has a different message that maybe not everyone will agree with.…
Even though the original documents are gone, I know God has preserved the Word (matthew 24:35). We can know the true Word even today. I can trust it, because God has told Christians that we must treat the Word with utmost care. Those few corrupt copies are due to laziness or a lack of respect for the Word. However, these errors are easy to spot and…

Cozy mysteries and great detective mysteries both show us that people will believe what their eyes see, but to find the truth you need to learn that the physical can be deceiving. It is human nature for us to look at what is presented to us, and believe it. For example, in Agatha Christy’s “The Blue Geranium” and Jacquez Futrelle’s “The Problem of Cell 13” both show characters being misled by the clues left behind. “The Blue Geranium” shows us how clues can be placed to lead you away from the true criminal.…
