It is incredible how our government has continued this long and is still somewhat successful. We vote for who we want to represent us and we do not vote for who we do not want to represent us. The American government has lasted so long because unlike other governments the government actually gives the citizens a choice. The founding fathers wanted the United States, to be a country that the citizens had a voice in the government and the government has a series of check and balances. Democracy is established on checks and balances. It is a structure of government with the motive that not one branch or department of government can ever gain an extreme amount of authority. The election process assists us to protect freedom by letting the citizens decide who gets to represent them and their concerns in the national government. Nowadays anyone can be a candidate in the United States for public office as long as he or she meets some particular regulations. The regulations are different from office to office, but have some similarities; must be a U.S. citizen, cannot be a convicted felon, it is essential be a resident of the state in which he or she lives, and must be a certian age. The election procedure has provided greatly to the accomplishment of the United States. After the United States of America was established in 1776, the U.S. has had shown forty-three tranquility pass on of authority from one presidential administration to next. That is considered a success even by oneself since other countries faced very unkind if not brutal passes on of authority.
