A Good King

If someone were to search Google for the definition of ‘a good king’ there would be links taking them to different pages of men throughout history that have earned the title of being a good king. But what made these men good kings? What characteristics or qualities earned them the title of a good king? Most people will say that it was because they were wise and discerning even in the difficult moments. Others will say that they were financially responsible able to plan ahead before they threw it all on the table. Some will say that it was because they were humble or servant minded putting the good of their people before others. If someone were to think about these qualities of a good king they would see that the Prince of Wales depicted in John Gillary’s painting “The Voluptuary” it is obvious that the Prince would not make a good king. A wise and discerning king is one who will be able to make the hard choices that profit the good of the kingdom. The Prince of Wales certainly isn’t thinking very far into the future as seen by his health and the items around him. Firstly, the prince is gluttonous. He is gluttonous to the point of sickness, as seen from the vomitorium behind him, the medicines of digestion on the table to the side of him and his obesity. Obviously, he is using these items to please himself and not thinking about the consequences like obesity that can lead to heart and other health problems. Thus, the prince is thinking about instant gratification rather than how they’ll feel the next day. If they prince were to make a decision it’s highly unlikely he’ll think about the moments in the future when his idea won’t be a solution
