In the 1930’s, before recordings were popularized amongst Nazi leaders, many of their speeches were dictated and taken down in short hand by stenographers or secretaries and then later typed up. Beginning in 1940, the movement to replace stenographers with sound recording equipment had just begun. The initial outcome was not effective until late 1942, when the technique had been perfected. Hitler would broadcast political speeches over the radio to help help foster likemindedness and unity among the people. Nearly all speeches given were recorded as spoken word which is more effective than typed and printed texts. Having speeches recorded before being released for the press or radio gave the Nazi leaders more freedom to say what they want because the recording could be edited in a way that would heighten the speech's propaganda effect. The propaganda ministry would then issue a press release with the edited speech, not only printed in the news papers, but also on the radio, as if it were the original speech. Multitrack recording, also know as multitracking or double tracking, is the process which allows for multiple recordings of different sound sources to form one cohesive track. In the process of multitracking, one can record multiple musical instruments and vocals individually and then layer them into one piece in any way one pleases.
